Patient Health Facilitator (PHF)

The PHF is your main contact while a patient of The Baker Centre. PHF will coordinate all your care and ensure that all necessary appointments and services are arranged in a timely manner. The PHF will ensure that all of your questions and concerns have been addressed and will be available by phone during business hours to assist you and your family.

The Surgical Oncologist is the surgeon that will discuss your case with you and determine if your cancer can be surgically removed. If so, then the surgeon will explain if any further testing is required, discuss what the surgery entails and what the next steps are to plan it.

The Medical Oncologist is a cancer doctor who specializes in treating cancer by giving chemotherapy drug treatments. Often, pancreatic patients need chemotherapy before surgery or chemotherapy is the main treatment given if surgery is not an option. The Medical Oncologist will discuss the details of chemotherapy including the drugs used, possible side effects and how/when the treatment is given.
Radiation Oncology
Dr. Timothy Nguyen
The Radiation Oncologist is a cancer doctor who specializes in treating cancer by giving radiation treatments to the affected area(s). Occasionally, radiation is given in combination with chemotherapy or on its own to treat the cancer. The Radiation Oncologist will explain the purpose of the radiation, how the treatments are given, the possible side effects, etc.
Primary Nurse
The Primary Nurse is assigned to work with the Medical or Radiation Oncologist. The role of the nurse is to arrange treatment plans, provide education about the planned treatment and to answer patient calls as related to side effects and symptom management.

Research is a fundamental aspect of the Baker Centre as many of the life-extending treatments we have today have come from previous research and clinical studies. It is our goal to integrate all patients coming through the Centre into the various research programs we offer and continue to advance the field of pancreatic cancer research. You will meet with a member of the research team while at the Baker Centre to learn about the studies available, and to answer your questions related to the research program.
Dietitian

The Baker Centre has a registered dietitian who is able to support you by providing diet advice and strategies to help you maintain body weight, preserve muscle mass, and manage treatment-related side effects. A dietitian can also help with digestion issues related to decreased functioning of the pancreas.
Social Worker
Tina Plat, Social Worker MSW
The Baker Centre also has a social worker available to assist you and your family with many different aspects during this difficult time. Social worker can assist you with coping/life stressors, illness adjustment, financial issues, and family coping. They are available for counselling. Please do not hesitate to ask if this is something about which you would like more information.
After you have seen all the clinicians today, the Patient Health Facilitator will review everything with you before you leave the clinic so that you have a clear understanding of what the next steps are going to be.
