Genetics: Medical Genetics Program of Southwestern Ontario

The Medical Genetics Program of Southwestern Ontario provides comprehensive services in medical genetics to individuals, couples, and families in London and surrounding area, in a caring, respectful, and compassionate environment for all patients. The purpose of genetic assessment is to evaluate individuals or families who are, or think they are, at risk of having a genetic condition and what that means for them, and potentially other members of their family. Through the course of our assessment, an individual’s personal and family history is collected and analyzed, and relevant records may be reviewed. Clinical examination and diagnostic testing may also be performed to establish a diagnosis. Genetic counselling helps to provide an understanding of the diagnosis, the recurrence risk and options available to individuals and families.

The Medical Genetics team at LHSC consists of geneticists, genetic counsellors, genetic counsellor assistants, research coordinator & assistant, and administrative/clerical support staff. We provide genetic counselling and genetic testing services for families of various indications, including prenatal, cancer, cardiology, metabolics, and pediatric/adult general, serving a population of approximately two million people. We speak with individuals and their families at all stages of life; preconception, during pregnancy, in childhood and in adulthood.

A virtual care appointment with your doctor or other healthcare provider is one where you meet in real time with a telephone call or by video conference.
