In total, 11 physicians work within the CSRU participating in weekly rotations. On any given week, two physicians cover the CSRU with the day person covering from 7:00 am to 3:00 pm and the night person covering from 3:00 pm until the following morning at 7:00 am. The day physician covers the weekend starting Friday morning at 7:00 am and signing over at 7:00 am on the Monday.
Physicians working within the CSRU are grouped into three main categories based on the primary area of training: anesthesia, surgery and critical care. Currently, there are four physicians from anesthesia, one from surgery and six from critical care. This model has the advantage of limiting resource requirements from any single specialty while fostering a multidisciplinary approach to patient management within the unit.
Monthly meetings are held among the physicians and include our nursing coordinators. These meetings aid in the resolution of administrative problems which may arise during the month and also serve as a method of distributing information within the group.
