Research Areas

Tumor virology, control of gene expression, nuclear import

Summary of Current Work

It is estimated that viruses are responsible for about 10-15% of human cancers. In this respect, viruses are a risk factor for cancer second only to tobacco. Our research is focused on the molecular and cellular biology of two small DNA tumor viruses, adenovirus and human papillomavirus.  We study these viruses as tools to learn more about fundamental mechanisms regulating cell growth and gene expression and how they induce cancer.

Current Projects

1) Molecular genetic analysis of adenovirus E1A function (CIHR funded)

2) Molecular genetic analysis of human papillomavirus and its role in head & neck cancers (CIHR funded)

3) Identification and analysis of short linear peptide motifs that function as non-conventional nuclear import signals (NSERC funded)
