Where do I find the Clinical Extern job postings?
Please refer to current job postings for information and current postings.
Can I apply for the Clinical Extern Program if I've completed my post-secondary education?
No. Applicants must be a student in second year or above of an approved post-secondary Nursing program.
Do Clinical Extern hours count towards my academic credits?
CEs do not receive academic credit. This is an employment opportunity external to your schooling.
Is this the same as my student placement?
No, this Clinical Extern role is not a student placement. While you are enrolled in an academic nursing program, your position as a Nursing Clinical Extern is an employment role, not an academic placement.
As a Clinical Extern, you are not connected directly with a preceptor and will be working under the direct or indirect supervision of registered staff within a defined scope of practice. Your responsibilities, expectations, and level of accountability differ from that of a student placement. It’s important to approach each shift with the understanding that you are part of the healthcare team as an employee, with clearly outlined duties and expectations.
Are we able to choose which unit placement we are assigned to?
While we consider your site preference provided during pre-screening, placements are based on unit capacity, clinical learning opportunities, and organizational needs. We strive to ensure all placements offer valuable, hands-on learning experiences aligned with your educational goals.
How do we provide monthly availability for this role?
During your first orientation shift, you will have the opportunity to provide a standing list of the days of the week you are available to be scheduled to work. This availability will be collected and updated for each academic term to allow for balance of academic and employment commitments. You will be provided with additional process details and instructions during your program orientation.
What is the policy on overtime averaging and excess of hours?
As a Non-Union employee, you will be asked to complete an acknowledgement form to confirm that you have been informed about how overtime and weekly hours are handled under the Employment Standards Act (ESA) for non-union roles. For most employees, this
acknowledgement does not change how hours are scheduled or paid. It is a standard
compliance step that applies to non-union roles and is primarily relevant for positions that may operate on rotating or extended shift schedules. This acknowledgement form will be provided by the Onboarding Team at the time of hire. For further information, please review the Employment Standards Act Fact Sheet, which provides an overview of provincial standards including hours of work and overtime averaging.
