Nursing Clinical Externs are recruited, hired, oriented, and supported centrally through the Clinical Extern Program Team. Externs are assigned to clinical units based on operational need and availability.
Program Eligibility: Nursing students enrolled in their second year of an approved CNO diploma nursing program or third of fourth year of a CNO approved baccalaureate nursing program.
Formal Interviews will include breakouts into individual rooms for one-on-one interviews. You will be notified if you are successful and scheduled into orientation. You will be contacted by the Clinical Extern Program Team around three weeks prior to your first date with details about your scheduled orientation dates. Attendance is mandatory and it is expected that you make arrangements to attend all sessions in full.
Extern unit assignments are at either University Hospital or Victoria Hospital, and site preference will be collected during recruitment for consideration. Our unit assignments are completed based on availability and operational need, but you will typically be assigned to an inpatient unit upon entry into the program. This is done strategically to provide the broadest opportunity for you to build foundational skills, and there are opportunities to apply to be considered for transfer to more specialized units later in your contract. Orientation will introduce you to role expectations, safety processes, and unit integration.
Hiring Schedule
Clinical Extern – Nursing roles are hired on a contract basis with an initial one-year commitment. Contracts may be extended or renewed based on operational needs.
Start Dates: February, May, June and July
