Facility Guidelines

Electrical Appliances

All electrical appliances must be checked by maintenance for safety reasons. Speak to the nurse on your unit to make arrangements to have these items looked at prior to their use in any unit.

Emergencies

All London Health Sciences Centre (LHSC) sites have a comprehensive plan for emergency situations. Fire drills are held on a regular basis. When you hear an alarm, please wait for instructions from the staff.

Infection Control

We wish to promote a healthy environment for our patients, staff, and visitors. It is important for you to note any signage at entrance points, or on a patient's door for instructions regarding visitor restrictions.

We ask that if you are feeling unwell that you delay your visit. If you must attend an appointment and are unwell, we ask that you call ahead. You may be asked to reschedule your appointment or to wear a mask on arrival.

Hand washing is the single most important factor in preventing the spread of infections. Disease causing bacteria can frequently be found on our hands therefore, we ask visitors to wash their hands on entering the facility, where requested in specialty areas, and when leaving a patient's room. Patients should also frequently wash their hands throughout their stay.

For your convenience, we have placed hand washing stations with waterless hand products at all entrance points. You may use either public washrooms or the waterless products that are provided.

These healthy behaviours are encouraged in order to reduce the spread of infections within our hospital. We wish to encourage you in becoming an active participant in promoting a healthy care environment.

Passes and Leaves of Absence (LOA)

Leaves of absence are available on an individual and program basis. Discuss this option with your care team to determine if it applies to you, and provide at least 24 hours advance notice to allow time for the pharmacy to prepare any medications you may require on your LOA.

Scent Free Policy

In recognition of the potential health concerns associated with scented products, we are committed to promoting a scent-free environment. Please refrain from using products containing fragrance such as perfume, aftershaves and hair sprays.

Security

Together everyone can help make LHSC a safe place. All staff are required to wear photo I.D. badges that includes a description of their position and unit/ department. If you are unsure of someone’s identity or purpose in your area, feel free to ask them to show you their badge. Or, if necessary, call staff for assistance. Some areas of the facility are equipped with surveillance cameras for the safety of patients/clients, visitors and staff.

Smoking

As a health care agency, London Health Sciences Centre is committed to providing a safe and smoke-free environment to all of its patients/clients, staff and visitors. LHSC has established a non-smoking policy, which governs all of its facilities across the organization. Any smoking must be done outside the facilities in designated areas no less than nine metres from any entrance.

Please also note that tobacco products are not sold on-site at the facility.
