Reducing Food Waste in LHSC's Cafeterias

The LHSC Green Team is excited to share an inspiring update about an initiative aimed at reducing the environmental impact of food waste at LHSC.

At the end of 2023, LHSC’s cafeteria vendor, Eurest Dining (a division of Compass Group), formed a partnership with Second Harvest, a Canada-wide charity that redirects surplus food to those in need through local non-profit organizations. When Eurest has surplus food available to donate, they create a post on the Second Harvest app. Local community partners in London who are part of the program can see the listings, accept the donation through the app, and schedule a pickup time.

Since LHSC Eurest retail spaces began their partnership with Second Harvest in October 2023, they have:

  • Contributed over $11,000 in donated food;
  • Prevented 6,400kg of greenhouse gas emissions (equivalent to 2,725 litres of gasoline); and
  • Provided 2,811 meals to members of the London community.

As Compass Group Canada continues to work towards achieving its Planet Promise Commitments, food waste reduction remains a focus for 2025. Their broader goal is to reduce preventable food waste by 50 per cent by 2030.

Together, LHSC and Eurest are helping to build a compassionate community and healthier planet.
