Second Chance Supplies is a sustainability program aimed at reducing waste while helping health-care clinics in need across the world by repurposing typically discarded medical supplies.
How it works:
Collection: The program provides LHSC departments with collection bins for staff to place typically discarded items from patient rooms after patients are discharged. These bins are collected regularly and stored until a partner organization can pick them up.
Pick-up and delivery: Partner charities and non-profit organizations, such as Not Just Tourists, pick up the supplies from LHSC and ship them to health-care facilities in need around the world.
Process improvements: Periodic waste audits of collected supplies by our Environmental Waste Specialists provide valuable insight for department managers to improve processes related to which supplies are taken into patient rooms.
Large equipment donations: Functional equipment that is no longer needed or being discarded by a department can be evaluated on a case-by-case basis to determine if it may be donated.
