Clinical Neurological Sciences

Welcome to the Department of Clinical Neurological Sciences at LHSC. We are a world-renowned program specializing in both neurology and neurosurgery, providing patient-centred care to individuals with complex neurological conditions from across southwestern Ontario and beyond.

Specialty care within neurology includes:

  • Epilepsy
  • Stroke
  • Movement disorders
  • Neuromuscular
  • Multiple sclerosis
  • Autoimmune neurology (the only program of its kind in Canada)

The Division of Neurosurgery provides all aspects of adult and paediatric neurosurgery for the region.

Home to a number of specialty units, including our Hyperacute Stroke Unit, Neuro-observational Care Unit, and the internationally recognized Epilepsy Monitoring Unit, our inpatient units are supported by a committed multidisciplinary team, including professionals from nursing, medicine, and various health disciplines. Working closely together, we provide exceptional patient care and strive to improve outcomes for individuals with complex neurological conditions.

As a service, we combine advanced technologies with our highly specialized teams to deliver life-saving and life-enhancing care.

Clinical Learning and Research

Through our affiliation with Western University, we attract top talent among both researchers and learners. We offer specialist training for residents and fellows in neurology and neurosurgery, and provide a rich academic environment that draws clinician-scientists and researchers committed to advancing neurological care and discovery.

Through our research at London Health Sciences Centre Research Institute, we make critical discoveries that advance our understanding of the neurological system and change the face of clinical care delivery for the better; like Dr. Christen Shoesmith’s clinical trials for ALS, which have contributed to the current Canadian ALS Best Practice Recommendations and will continue to shape care for the future.

Innovation

From our program’s early beginnings as home to London’s first neurosurgeon, Dr. Charles Drake, who achieved worldwide recognition for developing a cure for the brain's most challenging aneurysms, and co-founder Dr. Henry Barnett, who was the first in the world to provide indisputable evidence that aspirin can significantly reduce the future risk of stroke in individuals with specific risk factors, we have continued to stand on the shoulders of giants and are proud to advance our rich history of innovation.

With an extensive range of world, North American, Canadian, and provincial firsts across our specialties, including recent neurosurgical firsts that are making an incredible difference in the quality of life for patients with epilepsy and spinal disorders, we have continued to push the boundaries of what is possible in our field of practice, and are making real and meaningful differences in the lives of the patients and families we provide care for.
