Electromyography (EMG)

Electromyography (EMG) Referral

Electromyography (EMG) is a diagnostic test used to assess the function of nerves and muscles. Over 3,000 outpatient EMG examinations are performed at LHSC each year. You may be sent for an EMG test if you are experiencing numbness, tingling, weakness, or pain. The test may take from 45 minutes to 1.5 hours depending on what your doctor has ordered.

The Electromyography (EMG) Lab is located on the 7th floor of London Health Sciences Centre's University Hospital. It is a division of the Clinical Neurological Sciences Department.

Our waiting time for testing is based on the priority assigned to the testing and will range from four weeks to nine months.

Referral criteria

EMG referrals are assessed on a case-by-case basis rather than according to specific referral criteria. EMG referrals will be reviewed by a physician to determine appropriateness. Some conditions cannot be assessed or diagnosed by EMG, and those referrals will be declined. When possible, declined referrals will include advice to guide the referring provider on potential next steps or alternative assessment options.
