Gynecology In-Patient Care

Definition: Gynecology refers to the branch of medicine focusing on women’s health care. More specifically, gynecology encompasses the diagnosis and treatment of conditions and disorders affecting the female reproductive organs.

The 19-bed in-patient gynecology department offers post-operative care for women undergoing gynecological procedures. Before any surgery, you will have an appointment with the pre-admission clinic. The pre-admission appointment will cover: what to expect before, during, and after the surgery; how to prepare for the surgery; and information regarding the specific surgery, anesthesia, and recovery. You will also be able to ask any questions you may have regarding your surgery at that time.

Nurses on the Inpatient Gynecology unit assist with your care after your surgery and help you prepare for caring for yourself at home.  You may also work with other members of our health care team, which consists of Doctors, Pharmacists, Physiotherapists, Social workers and a Nurse case manager as you recover here in hospital.

Procedures may include:

Cystocele &/or Rectocele Repair: Cystocele = type of hernia caused by part of the bladder bulging into the vagina. Rectocele = type of hernia caused by part of the rectum pushing against weakened tissue in the back part of the vagina causing a bulge.

Hysterectomy: Removal of the uterus (womb). Can be either abdominal, laparoscopic, or vaginal hysterectomy.

Radical Hysterectomy & Lymph Node Dissection: Treatment for early cancer of the cervix. This procedure involves the removal of the uterus, cervix, upper vagina, and lymph nodes (sometimes ovaries as well).

Staging Laparotomy for Pelvic Mass: Treatment for abnormal growth in the pelvis. “Staging” refers to checking to see if the pelvic mass has spread to other parts of the body.

Vulvectomy: Treatment of cancerous growth on the vulva. Procedure includes the removal of cancer and area of vulva around it. May also include the removal of lymph nodes in the groin area.
