Indigenous Healing and Cultural Practices Policy

At LHSC, we are committed to providing care that respects and reflects the diverse identities of the patients we serve. Our Indigenous Healing and Cultural Practices Policy supports First Nations, Inuit, Métis, and Urban Indigenous (FNIMU) patients in accessing traditional ceremonies, medicines, and healing practices as part of their care journey.

This policy was developed in collaboration with local Indigenous leaders, Elders, and Knowledge Keepers, ensuring it reflects the needs, traditions, and values of FNIMU patients and families.

The new Indigenous Healing and Cultural Practices Policy includes guidance for members of LHSC care teams on how to access:

  • Smudging and other traditional ceremonies;
  • Traditional medicines in collaboration with Knowledge Keepers;
  • LHSC’s Visiting Elders program;
  • Indigenous Healing Spaces within the hospital; and
  • Indigenous practitioners to collaborate with and integrate into care teams.

Supporting traditional healing practices within LHSC is another step in honouring Indigenous rights and advancing our commitment to Reconciliation, including our work to uphold Joyce’s Principle and Jordan’s Principle. We are proud to take this step toward a more inclusive, culturally safe, and equitable health-care environment.
